Commercial HVAC Problems: 4 Smells that Signal Trouble

January 18, 2023

Strong and unpleasant odors are among the early warning signs of a problem with your commercial HVAC system. You never want to walk into your Boston, MA, office and smell something you never smelled before. Consider these four weird smells that signal trouble in your building.

1. Rotten Eggs

Never ignore a rotten egg or sulfur smell, as this is a sign of a gas leak. Most gas companies add odors to their products because gas has no organic odor. If either smell is being emitted, ensure everyone leaves the building as soon as possible. Then, shut off the gas and finish clearing it out. Finally, have a local gas company come out to investigate.

2. Burning Smells

It’s natural to pick up on a burning odor when you turn on your HVAC system, especially for the first time this year. If the smell persists for longer than 30 minutes, that means you need to schedule a repair. This smell may relate to an electrical problem.

3. Oil Odor

An oil smell often alerts you of a leak, which may relate to the tank, filter, or line that carries it. While you can look for the problem yourself, always have a professional conduct a full assessment. You’ll risk doing more damage if you try to fix the leak yourself.

4. Gas Emissions

You may smell a gas odor from your commercial HVAC system because some fuel sources have a heavy scent. It’s often a sign of a gas leak, which can cause people in the building to become ill. Suspect a leak in your building? Exit as soon as possible and evacuate anyone still inside before you call for help.
